Meeting of the Chairman of the IISC General Assembly with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in the Republic of Bulgaria, 16 July 2018, Sofia

The possibilities for cooperation between Bulgaria and Algeria and promotion of economic and cultural relations between the two countries were discussed at a meeting of the Chairman of the IISC General Assembly Rumen Petkov and H. E. Mrs. Latifa Benazza, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in the Republic of Bulgaria.

The talks focused on the construction and tourism industries where Bulgaria could be extremely helpful to share expertise. H. E. Mrs. Latifa Benazza likened Algeria to a major construction site. She explained that the government was preparing a program to build two million new homes. This is where the Bulgarian construction industry capability would be extremely useful and welcome. The meeting also discussed the possibility for pilgrimage tourism to Algeria where many Christians live. Religions there are free to profess while Bulgaria’s experience would be equally extremely beneficial. The discussion covered, inter alia, the issue of energy, Bulgaria’s expertise in the energy sector and the prospect to offer support to Algeria to strengthen and install a power transmission network. A focus of the discussion was the interaction between the two countries in the field of light industry.

During the meeting, Rumen Petkov expressed his satisfaction with the fact that Algeria remains an island of stability in an otherwise difficult and troubled region. He added that the state demonstrated exceptional efficiency in countering terrorism.

Mr. Petkov informed H. E. Mrs. Latifa Benazza about the potential and expertise available to the Institute in the fight against acts of violence and the illicit trafficking in drugs and drug trade. The meeting discussed the possibility of offering programs for the seizure of arms that are illegally possessed by the Algerian population and for the buildup of the police and Special Forces there. H. E. Mrs. Latifa Benazza proposed specific partnership with two institutes where the meetings are upcoming: the African-Algerian Institute with a focus on countering the illicit trafficking and dealing in drugs and the Institute with Algeria’s Ministry of Interior.
